The Best Self-Tanner – How To Keep Your Skin Glowing All Year Long

Winter makes us all feel like ghosts who are afraid of sunlight.

If you’re freezing your booty off on the Eastern US, or just working from sun up to sun down, there isn’t much time to soak up some rays. Not to mention, sun rays in the northern hemisphere are hella weak this time of year. #sciencebitch. Last year, I got fed up with looking at my pale skin, dark circles, and pimple scars, so I decided to give self-tanner a go-go. During my hunt for the best self-tanner on the market, I found St. Tropez Self Tan Express mousse and decided to give it a shot myself.

First of all, I decided to use an application product like a lotion instead of the tanning beds because I’ve read over and over that fake baking is so bad for you. It exponentially increases your risk of getting skin cancer, and will (obvi) premature your skin. Also, when you wear those stupid goggles you get those white circles around your eyes that are super embarrassing. Cross that sh*t off the list!

I could just suck it up and deal with my pale skin and glob on the makeup every day but I’m L A Z Y. Most pale white women can relate– not being a ghost makes you look healthier, refreshed, and alive…lol. When you look good, you feel good, and you conquer the world.

Of course, I was hesitant to try it because I was afraid of looking like the spawn of Snookie and an Oompa Loompa. There’s nothing worse than a bright orange, streaky coat that shouts to the heavens “HEY CHECK OUT MY FAKE TAN!!!”

After evaluating my options, and weighing the reviews of the many brave ladies before me. I went ahead and purchased St. Tropez Self Tan Express Mousse. To put it simply, it’s flat-out amazing. This is my personal experience using the product, and why I think should add it to your beauty supply stash ASAP.

St. Tropez Self Tan Express Review - Self Tanner Reviews

The Best Self-Tanner 2018 – St. Tropez Self Tan Express Review –

Oompa Loompa Count = 0.

After letting the St. Tropez Self Tan Express Mousse sit on your body, the resulting color is a gorgeous glowing tan and not the slightest bit orange. Rather than looking like a burnt Cheeto, you can relish in the fact that your tan actually looks somewhat natural. What’s even greater about the gradual tanning product is that you can leave it on your skin for 1-3 hours, depending on how deep you want your tan to get.

Let it sit, then let it rinse– All in just a few hours.

While doing my “best self-tanner” research, I was reading about how some products require you to let them sit on your skin overnight. Guys, that’s gross and wildly uncomfortable. And if you have white sheets? Forget about it. I think we all can remember that Chrissy Teigen tanning mishap…

Why put yourself through all that yuckiness, when with St. Tropez Self Tan Express products you can rinse in as little as one hour? I mean sure, you’re going to feel sticky af with any self-tanner, but knowing you’ll be able to rinse it off within a few hours makes tolerating it way easier.

No streakiness.

When looking for the best self-tanner, streakiness is a NO GO. One of my favorite things about this particular St. Tropez product is that it’s not a lotion or a spray—it’s a mousse! The St. Tropez tanning mousse makes applying your self-tanner way easier and allows total body coverage. If you miss a spot, it’s pretty easy to notice, and the amount of layer won’t affect how dark your product is.

Think of it like the opposite of drawing with a marker. When you “draw” over your previous layer, rather than getting darker, it stays the same shade. You won’t have to worry about looking like a patchwork hot mess, and that’s a total win in the unwritten book of self-tanner 101.

Bearable stank.

When you use self-tanner, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve already accepted the fact that you won’t be smelling like a Victoria’s Secret angel. In my opinion, while the St. Tropez Self Tan Express Mousse doesn’t smell like cotton candy dreams, it is definitely bearable…especially since you get to rinse off that same day.

Don’t Phunk With My Skin.

Again, we’re all different, especially when it comes to our skincare routine. My skin is actually pretty sensitive so I was super nervous to put this product on my face. I followed the directions and mixed a little of the mousse with my Neutrogena Moisturizer and applied the tanner to my face using a tanning mitt.

I had no issues with breakouts as a result of the tanner application. It’s a facial miracle, and one of the main reasons why I think it’s one of the best self-tanner on the market.

Quality > Price.

With self-tanners, you’ve got to be willing to invest in a decent quality product. And trust me guys, that hurts to say as a poor college grad. St. Tropez Self Tan Express Mousse isn’t cheap. It comes in around $44 dollars a bottle. After purchasing a tanning mitt to help with application, and exfoliant to make your tan last as long as possible, you’ll be spending around $50+. Luckily the bottle lasts awhile and for my 5’1 stature, I’ve used the same bottle at least 6 times…and it’s still not empty!

The Best Self-Tanner

Overall conclusions:

If you’re interested in fakin’ it until ya make it this winter, St. Tropez Self Tan Express Mousse is something you need to give a shot. It’s by far the best self-tanner on the market.

In a perfect world, self-tanner should last several weeks. However, St. Tropez Tanning Mousse lasts a few days to a week depending on your maintenance. I’d recommend following the 10 Commandments of Self Tanner, or some of these guidelines to make your tanning application super easy, and last as long as possible:

  1. EXFOLIATE EXFOLIATE EXFOLIATE. You don’t want your tan looking spotty and patchy, so remove that dead outer layer with a loofah, sponge, or exfoliating cloth. Pay attention to areas like your ankles or elbows where you don’t give yourself as much lovin’. I’ve noticed my armpits will sometimes be spotty with the tanner as it comes off.
  2. Moisturize your skin to keep it glowing! The drier your skin, the more likely it’ll flake off and you’ll look like an alligator…and no one wants to look like an alligator.
  3. Apply your tanning product with a mitt. Even if you decide to try a cheaper tanning lotion I would recommend applying with a mitt and not your hand…even if you wash your hand immediately after you finish your application it’ll be dyed and look weird. Using a mitt reassures you have even coverage and keeps your hands clean.
  4. Use less product on your elbows, ankles, and back of your hands. They soak up the self-tanner and get too dark.
  5. When using self-tanner on your face, mix in some of your facial moisturizers.

Have you guys tried any other self-tanning products? Do you agree that St. Tropez makes the best self-tanner out there? What are your favorites, and which ones should we avoid?

My latest post in my makeup category covers a new self-tanner that DOESN’T STINK that I found at the Indie Beauty Expo in LA! If I don’t love that one, I will definitely try this one out! Thanks for sharing your review!
