As the weather gets colder, I find myself pressing the snooze button more and more.
Why is it that your bed always feels like a beautiful soft cloud in the wee hours of the morning? Seriously, it’s just cruel. For me, getting up to go to work is always a struggle and a half. I normally sleep a lot, so this whole “adulting” thing is starting some serious beef with my circadian rhythm. Because I sleep to the last possible second, it’s hard to get up and put on a full face of makeup…especially every single weekday. So I am always optimizing my easy and quick makeup routine.
Let’s be honest here, sleep is just something I’m not willing to sacrifice–Presenting the idea of the “5-minute face.”
My “5-minute face” makeup routine, is a quick makeup routine that instantly makes me look more awake, refreshed, and not appear like I’ve just rolled out of bed (which I definitely just did).
Now I’m a poor 24-year-old, so I’m all for the drugstore makeup. The products that I use for my 5-minute face are on the cheaper side– but don’t fret, since they still work some serious magic.
Affordable makeup and you get to sleep a little more?! #winning. Keep reading below to learn how you can master the 5-minute face using this quick makeup routine.
What you’ll need for this easy and quick makeup routine:
- BB cream
- Finishing powder
- Eyelash curler
- Blush/shimmery Bronzer
- Setting Spray
Step 1: Moisturize.
Moisturizing should always be your first step before applying makeup. It gives your skin the moisture it needs (duh) and makes your skin look and feels better.
When I was a ~tween~ I went to the dermatologist because I had a rough case of acne. That’s where my dermatologist informed me that I needed to use moisturizer to help clear my skin.
Believe me, that news had me shook. Put moisturizer on my already super oily skin? Sounds like a bad idea- but it’s actually not! When your face is dry, your body overcompensates and produces more oil. So yeah…you need to add moisturizer to your daily routine if you haven’t already.
Once I started using Neutrogena Sensitive Skin moisturizer, I never turned back. It’s great because I’ve never had a problem with breakouts, and my skin doesn’t feel gross and oily after I apply it.
Step 2: Primer.
Make that 5-minute makeup last! Primer is totally one of the most underrated beauty products to exist. It works to smooth out your skin, blur out pores, and reduce any redness. When you apply your makeup over it, it helps to prolong it, making it last All. Freakin. Day.
Now I’m not a beauty blogger, so I can’t say I’ve tried all the primers to exist. I’ve used two primers (since I’m a new believer) and they were Maybelline Face Studio Primer and Elf Hydrating Face Primer. I gotta say, even though it’s *GASP* cheaper, I actually the elf one better! The feel texture of it is so smooth and it applies to your skin so easily.
Step 3: BB Cream
No need to apply all that foundation, when a BB cream does everything you need and more! BB cream gets rid of all my skin discoloration, helps with my purple under eye bags and circles (adulting is stressful, don’t @ me) and blurs the f out of my pores.
They have different types of BB cream out there, all with varying degrees of coverage and shades.
My absolute favorite is Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream. It’s an 8 in 1 masterpiece.
On the back of the packaging, it lists that it:
- Clears acne (2% salicylic acid swag)
- Conceals imperfections.
- Minimizes the look of pores.
- Reduces the appearance of redness. –my fave part
- Adjusts to skin tone.
- Hydrates and smoothes.
- Enhances and clarifies skin.
- Oil-free, with a lightweight feel.
They also make a pink packaging, ideal for normal skin -while the blue is better for combination to oily skin.
Step 4: Concealer.
A crucial step in any quick makeup routine. No baggage here ladies. Apply concealer under your eyes to instantly brighten up your face. Just make sure you apply in a triangle.
I like using the Revlon Photoready Concealer since it’s so easy to apply and blend. I recently tried NYX Dark Circle Concealer and I like that just as much, just not as convenient to apply…but that’s easily resolved with a concealer brush on hand.

Step 5: Finishing Powder.
Set your BB cream and concealer with a powder brush and finishing powder. Again, I use Maybelline…they have an awesome collection of matte finish face products that work and last you a long time.
Step 6: Eyelash Curling.
Wake up your eyes by curling those lashes. I like doing this before I apply mascara since it makes your eyes appear bigger, and eyelashes appear longer and fanned out. If you want, heat it with a blow-dryer for a few seconds for a more exaggerated effect.
Step 7: Mascara.
Mascara dem lashes gurl. It instantly makes your eyes look bigger and less asleep. It is ESSENTIAL in my quick makeup routine.
After curling your lashes, apply mascara to the top lashes, as well as the bottom. I recently splurged from Sally Beauty and bought Ardell’s Wispies Fiber Building Mascara since they make such amazing fake eyelashes, and it does NOT disappoint. It’s on the more expensive side at $15, but I’m super happy with it and would definitely purchase it again.
Step 7: Blush.
I love adding a little color to my cheeks, so my face is more dimensional and not just one color.
I use a CoverGirl Shimmer Blush in “soft mink.” and it adds just a little color and highlight to my cheekbones- and I need that considering I haven’t been out in the sun for several weeks.
Step 8: Setting Spray.
Make your 5-minute face last much longer by using a makeup setting spray. I love the NYX Matte Setting Spray since it’s affordable and gets the job done, but if you have more money to spend, I’ve heard amazing things about Urban Decay’s setting spray.
Optional: Bronzer and Eyeliner.
If you have more time (10 minutes instead of 5), add bronzer and eyeliner to your routine. Bronzer adds more dimension and color (if you’re a pale white girl like me) while eyeliner immediately makes your eyes appear bigger and more open. Steer clear of dark eyeliner on your bottom lash line, and opt for white eyeliner if you want to appear more awake!
*Pro tip* If you’re using bronzer to contour, use a matte finish and not a shimmery bronzer. It better defines your facial features.
BOOM, you’ve just learned my quick makeup routine and have mastered the 5-minute face. It’s perfect for those who value sleep as much as I do, and roll right out of bed to go to class, work, an appointment etc.
