When I was in 5th grade, I picked up a ball of yarn for the first time.
My mom had a large craft bin filled with brightly colored balls of yarn in our basement, and I am someone who always wants to try something new. I started off knitting by using wooden barbecue skewers (I kid you not) until I could get my mom to bring me to the store to purchase legit knitting needles. I eventually switched over to crocheting (and I love it)! Little did I know, of all the amazing health benefits of knitting and crocheting have and would bring into my life.
The preference between the two activities is totally personal…but one thing remains true, and that is that they are a ton of health benefits of knitting and crocheting…who woulda thought?!
So what kind of health benefits of knitting and crocheting are we talkin’ about here?
1. Stress relief.
Knitting and crochet both work to relieve stress. They are calming activities focused mainly on repetitive motions. Thus, they assist in slowing down our overactive and anxious thoughts.
If you know anything about practicing “mindfulness,” is that it involves using all five (unless you can see dead people), senses to focus fully on the present moment. While knitting and crocheting, the yarn textures, bright colors and immense focus reduce our anxiety and help bring us back to the present moment.
And no SUSAN, just because we are in our twenties, doesn’t mean we don’t have any stress…in fact, I’d go as far as saying it’s just the opposite. We’re in a huge transition period from college to adult life, and it’s harder than ever to secure a solid job.
We need all the stress relief we can get!
2. A happier you!
Knitting and crocheting make people happy! A survey taken in 2013 revealed that 2,900 out of 3,500 respondents (81.5%) said they felt happier after knitting. Happy wife (when you knit her a new scarf cause she’s cold) Happy Life!

3. Feelings of self-accomplishment.
Nothing makes me feel better than when I finish making a project. I am so immensely proud of myself that I end up sending pictures to every human I’ve ever interacted with on planet Earth.
Oh and everyone on social media? They probably know too.
I adore giving my creations as gifts…and people love receiving them! A gift you put in time, effort and money into stands out amongst the rest.
If you have depression and anxiety associated with low self-esteem, you should consider getting into yarn crafting! It’s a beautiful form of self-expression and allows you to give to others in a beautiful and creative way.
4. Keeps your mind sharper for longer.
Studies show that knitting and crocheting are good for yo brain (not just because it reduces your stress). Knitting and crocheting stimulate the mind, so as you age, they assist in preventing and reducing the risk of developing cognitive impairments typically associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
5. Social opportunities.
Get social ladies!!
Knitting and crochet groups provide opportunities to meet others who share a love for your craft. Many local stores offer classes and other services to teach people wanting and willing to learn.
Not only is it an opportunity to enjoy other people’s company, but the insight and advice others can teach you will help improve your own projects and technique. Everyone knows something you don’t.
And NO! Knitting and Crocheting aren’t just for old grannies. There are opportunities and projects for people of all ages. In fact, I see more and more millennials getting into yarn crafting…and I am HERE FOR IT!
